The Durable Synthetic Paper for Specialty Print and Laminated Materials
From waterproof menus and tear-resistant maps to heavy-duty manuals for industrial job sites, TESLIN® substrate synthetic paper is a durable and lamination-friendly solution that is engineered to meet many specialty printing applications.

TYPES: SP600 /  SP700 /  SP1000  /  SP1200  /  SP1400

Several major performance attributes make Teslin substrate exceptionally well-suited to meet the many challenges of specialty print projects:
Doesn’t require special inks and long dry times, as other synthetic papers do
Compatible with a wide range of print processes, including digital and laser for on-demand and variable data printing
Resists water, chemicals, solvents and abrasion
Delivers unparalleled lamination strength
Offers unique texture and feel

Ruggedly Durable in Multiple Ways
Not only is Teslin substrate used as a waterproof paper because its polyolefin structure resists water, it also is highly resistant to abrasion, chemicals and solvents. While other synthetic papers need to protect printed text and images with a coating or laminate because inks and toners sit on top of their surfaces, Teslin substrate’s microporous structure absorbs and locks in inks, toners, adhesives and laminates to make printed text and graphics virtually indestructible.

Couple this secure print with excellent foldability, pliability and cold-crack resistance for added levels of resilience, and the result is specialty print and laminated materials that can withstand many of the most severe usage environments.

Amazingly Printable and Easy to Finish
Teslin substrate accommodates almost every conventional or digital printing process, including offset, flexographic, thermal transfer, laser, inkjet or screen technologies. Commercial printers can print fixed information using one technology then add variable information such as names, registration numbers or bar codes using another. And, unlike other coated or multilayer synthetic papers, it doesn’t require special inks or drying equipment. Teslin substrate also stands up to all forms of finishing, including sewing, grommetting, perforating, embossing, foil stamping, punching and more, offering greater design flexibility and creativity than other coated or multi-layer synthetic papers.

Unlike many synthetic papers, conventional inks and toners absorb into Teslin substrate’s microporous structure and set within seconds. That saves time on specialty print jobs and delivers brilliant, high-resolution printing of colors, photography, logos and graphics without long dry-times or additional processing.

Highly Bondable
The unique microporous matrix of Teslin synthetic paper substrate enables it to form powerful, virtually impregnable bonds with laminate film. That eliminates the need for edge-sealing and allows specialty print projects to be die-cut into any shape for one-of-a-kind designs. Those investing in lamination will not find another synthetic paper that provides the same durability and shelf-life as Teslin substrate.

TESLIN® substrate combines the strength and dimensional stability of polyolefin with the absorbency of silica to form a unique microporous matrix. The result is a range of durability benefits not available from competing synthetic paper stocks, including:

  • Abrasion- and scuff-resistance – Printed text and graphics cannot be scratched or rubbed off the surface of Teslin substrate without destroying the material itself. This print permanence results in tamper-evident/tamper-resistant performance without the need for laminates or protective coatings.
  • Water-resistance – Polyolefin is hydrophobic, which causes Teslin substrate to repel water. This enables Teslin substrate to meet British Standard (BS) 5609 for immersion-labeling testing, which includes detailed durability criteria for print permanence, adhesive strength and abrasion-resistance for water-exposed labels.
  • Chemical-resistance – Teslin substrate withstands exposure to a variety of chemicals and solvents and can even be dry-cleaned. Most other synthetic papers require a coating to perform as well as Teslin substrate does without enhancement.
  • Thermal stability – Teslin substrate remains pliable in temperatures from -70°C/-94°F to 180°C/356°F, even during prolonged exposure or rapid temperature change. Unlike Teslin substrate, other synthetics can become brittle or melt when exposed to elevated temperatures such as those generated by desktop laser printers.
  • Tear-resistance and conformability – The flexibility of Teslin substrate enables it to resist tearing and to conform to pointed, rough and uneven surfaces or fluid-filled bags.
  • Sterilization-compatible – Teslin substrate withstands various sanitization methods, including steam cleaning and gamma radiation.
  • Ink and toner protection – Inks and toners absorb into Teslin substrate’s microporous matrix, locking printed text and graphics into its surface and making them nearly indestructible.
  • Lamination- and finish-friendly – Teslin substrate bonds with laminate films when either the adhesive or the laminate itself flows into its pores, enhancing the durability of the material. Due to the unyielding strength of the resulting mechanical bond, edge-sealing isn’t required and Teslin substrate is able to withstand punishing finish processes such as perforating, punching, folding, sewing, grommeting, foil stamping and embossing without cracking.

The microporous matrix of TESLIN® substrate readily absorbs inks and toners, bonding printed text, graphics and photos to its surface nearly instantaneously to ensure that printed information stays secure longer than on other print materials.

That distinguishes Teslin substrate from other synthetics that rely on coatings to adhere inks and toners to their smooth surfaces, making it easier for printed data to be scratched off or removed. In contrast, data printed on Teslin substrate is safely protected from normal everyday wear and tear.

Lamination-friendly for exceptional durability – The ability of Teslin substrate to bond with lamination films provides mechanical delamination strength that is up to 10 times stronger than other synthetic materials. Its micropores also quickly absorb polymers and other materials, enabling the material to form strong bonds to a variety of substrates without the use of adhesives, including:
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
Polypropylene (PP)
Polycarbonate (PC)
High-density polyethylene (HDPE)
Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)
Sheet molding compound (SMC)
Polyurethane foam
Foam rubber
Synthetic rubber
Fiberglass
Thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO)
Tamper-evident for information security – The ability of Teslin substrates unique polyolefin-silica matrix to absorb inks and toners enables it to provide tamper-evident security with no additional processing or expense.

TESLIN® Substrate: Why Microporosity Makes It Unique Among Synthetic Papers
The science behind TESLIN® substrate distinguishes it from every other synthetic paper or printable plastic available today. Because of its one-of-a-kind microporous polyolefin-silica matrix, Teslin substrate harmonizes a range of seemingly contradictory performance characteristics to create a versatile and adaptable enabling technology:

Strength and flexibility – Polyolefin provides Teslin substrate with the rigidity and reinforcing strength of plastic, while microporosity allows it to remain lightweight and flexible in a broad array of processing and service conditions.

High absorption capacity and water-resistance – The tiny holes in Teslin substrate readily absorb inks and toners to ensure brilliant color reproduction and to lock-in printed text, graphics and photos nearly instantaneously. The polyolefin base helps the material retain form when submerged in or exposed to water, enabling it to meet British Standard (BS) 5609 for immersion-labeling testing.

Rugged durability and protective cushioning – Teslin substrate is resistant to chemicals, abrasion, moisture and temperature extremes, yet it maintains the suppleness needed to cushion, insulate and protect electronic materials from damage, unlike harder, less-forgiving synthetic substrates.

Other differentiating benefits associated with microporosity include:
Static-dissipation – Many synthetic substrates are vulnerable to static build-up. This can damage magnetic strips or electronic components embedded in printed cards, labels and other items; create paper jams that slow print production; or generate electrical currents that can shock or injure press operators or harm printing equipment.

The micropores in Teslin substrate naturally absorb and dissipate static, reducing the potential for electrical discharge. This enables the material to pass American National Standards Institute/Electrostatic Discharge Association (ANSI/ESD) standard S541 For the Protection of Electrostatic Discharge Susceptible Items at 50 percent humidity.

Breathability – Teslin substrate has the strength and rigidity to function as a hard physical barrier, yet is porous enough to transmit air, vapor and gases.

Conformability – Labels and other materials printed on Teslin substrate readily conform to rough, fluid or uneven surfaces.

Highly Bondable Adhesion – Teslin substrate instantly absorbs polymers and other materials, enabling it to form strong mechanical bonds to a variety of substrates without adhesives.

Lamination strength – Melted plastic film flows into the pores of Teslin substrate during the lamination process, creating powerful interlocking bonds that are up to 10 times stronger than other synthetic materials.
